Winter Palace of the Bogd Khan

The Bogd Khan or Holy King (1869-1924) was Mongolia's eighth reincarnated spiritual leader. In 1911 when the country declared its independence from China he became the country's head of state. He was arrested by Chinese troops in 1919, reinstated then replaced by invading White Russians before he eventually became a figurehead after the Bolshevik revolution in 1921. The Communists ensured that no more reincarnations were declared, but eventually in 1999 the Dalai Lama enthroned the
Ninth Jebtsundamba Khutugtu as spiritual leader. The Winter Palace (now a museum) is in a compound which includes six temples.
