Turpan & Emin Minaret

Turpan (or Turfan - or Tulufan) with its history of over 2,000 years was an important staging post on the Northern Silk Road. Situated at the heart of Eurasia it is about the furthest you can get from a sea anywhere in the world. Despite this it is only about 100 feet above sea level, and just to the south the Turpan Depression is the second lowest place on earth at about 500 feet below sea level. It is also hot in summer, very hot. When we were there daytime temperatures were over 40°C. Despite this it is in a fertile oasis watered since ancient times by a network of underground channels bringing meltwater from the Tienshan.
