Kashgar - Index

Kashgar (or Kashi) is in the far west of Xingiang in the far west of China, so far from Beijing that everyone uses local time. At the point where the desert meets the mountains it is a node for routes through the Tienshan and Karakoram ranges. It was an important post on the Silk Road and its extensive old town is now surrounded by a modern city. Culturally and ethnographically the area is so different that on arrival we felt as though we had left China.
