Stok is on the south side of the Indus Valley not far from Leh. The village is dominated by its palace which was built in 1820 and became the residence of the Ladakhi royal family in 1834 when the Dogra army from Kashmir took the palace at Leh. The family still live at Stok. The king and queen have ceremonial but not governmental roles (although the queen has been elected an MP). We spent several nights at Stok in Shakti's village house.
