Statue of Maitreya Buddha at Diskit
Maitreya Buddha is a future Buddha who will re-teach the dharma (teachings of Buddha) when they have been forgotten.
Facing Pakistan down the Shyok Valley the statue was largely funded by local contributions and has three main functions.
These are the protection of Diskit Village below, prevention of further war with Pakistan and the promotion of world peace.
The nearby Siachen Glacier was the scene of armed conflict between India and Pakistan in the 1980s. A ceasefire was established
in 2003 by when about 2,000 lives had been lost, although mainly due to the extreme conditions of the area rather than fighting.
