| L'Anse aux Meadows
Located at the northernmost tip of Newfoundland's Northern Peninsula L'Anse aux Meadows is the only site of a Norse settlement in North America (excluding Greenland of course). It is certain that Norwegians who had settled in Greenland explored this coast around 1000 and had a year-round settlement here for several years. It is likely that this was a base for exploration further south to Vinland. All this happened 500 years or so before Columbus first visited not North America but islands in the Caribbean. The only remains of the original site are grassy mounds but reconstructions of buildings have been made and these are staffed by excellent guides who have a thorough knowledge of their subject and experiment with Norse technology.
Strictly speaking this and the next few galleries are out of sequence as before coming into the Northern Peninsula we spent a few excellent days in Labrador.
