to St Barbe
A lovely morning. Booked in at ferry terminal at motel at 0600
(found return times had been changed) and down to assembly area.
Pleasant crossing but cloud building from west. Arrived in Blanc-Sablon
and all road signs in French as this bit in Québec (time
is different, too, but ferry keeps NL time). Headed east to try
to keep sun and ended up in Pinware River Provincial Park. Wandered
round headland on beach, nice. Took trail up to Pinware Hill
(good) but waymarking poor and nearly got lost on return as route
into forest not obvious. Headed back west to West St Modeste
to take the new boardwalk up Bouquets Hill and wander round the
top (superb walk with fantastic scenery). Quick detour via L'Anse
Amour on way back to Forteau. Seaview Cabins, Forteau.
Very pleasant new cabin (older ones may not be so nice), large
and well equipped. Room serviced and linen replaced daily. Supposed
to be wireless internet but not working. Shop over the road basic,
better ones in nearby settlements.
Quick look at L'Anse au Loup harbour then onto Red Bay via good
road, mainly forest after Pinware. Information Centre interesting
then boat over to Saddle Island for trail. On return headed up
Tracey Hill Trail (good but losing sun now) then along Boney
Shore. Back to Forteau with rain threatening.
Dull, rather ominous morning. Drove to Point Amour and walked
to L'Anse Amour settlement and back along Raleigh Trail on coast,
pleasant walk. Went into lighthouse and spent all morning looking
round and quizzing staff. Still cold (had rained while we were
in lighthouse). To Seaview Restaurant for chowder and Jigg's
Dinner. Then to L'Anse au Loup to take Pioneer Trail to Schooner
Cove (not overexciting).
Beautiful morning, packed up and out early. Down to Forteau Harbour
for general nose around and watch fish being unloaded from boats.
Went to L'Anse au Clair to do Jersey Rooms Trail, good path along
coast and very pretty and interesting, plenty of Minke whales
around. Then on into Québec where scenery seemed to change
quite abruptly. Stopped at Middle Bay for cup of tea and wander.
Drove on to St Paul River, very good scenery on way but not much
in settlement to keep us. Thought about time to head back for
ferry. Stopped at Middle Bay harbour for wander, interesting.
Stopped at Brador Falls and went up little trail, falls OK, views
over bay nice. Back to Blanc-Sablon and up Mont Parent Trail,
very good views, would have liked longer. Down to ferry terminal
for 1800 to check in and have cup of tea in terminal cafe (meals
looked good). Ate on ferry, good value, filling food. Ferry,
which originated in Denmark, comfortable enough but looking very
dated. St Barbe Motel, St Barbe. See 30 August
(4-10 September on previous page.)
