| La Paz Streets
La Paz de Ayacucho was established as a planned town in 1549 and was known then as as Nuestra Senora de La Paz. Today it has a population of just under 900,000 and is the seat of government for Bolivia. Its influence is eyed covetously by Santa Cruz, the nation's economic powerhouse. Its main street, known as El Prado but in reality with several names for different sections, is built over the river flowing through the valley bottom. Side streets climb steeply from El Prado and challenge the lungs at an altitude of 3660m (12000ft).
