Kirkjubżur

Kirkjubżur is a small settlement on the west side of Streymoy, not far from T—rshavn. In medieval times it was the ecclesiastical and cultural centre of Faroe. The cathedral was damaged in an avalanche in 1772 and, due to water ingress, the remains are temporarily protected by a shed. The adjacent church is even older and is the only medieval church in use in Faroe. On the foundations of the bishops' palace is Roykstovan, a farmhouse inhabited by the same family for 17 generations; part of it is open to the public.
