Skeidarársandur

Skeidarásandur is the huge glacial outwash plain from the Vatnajökull icecap. This flat area of braided glacial rivers flowing across black sands stretches for about 50 miles along the coast and reaches 10 miles inland. Devoid of all settlement it is crossed by the Ring Road. Occasionally massive floods caused by eruptions under the ice sweep across the sandur for days. These can do serious damage to bridges which now have a standard design so their spans can be quickly replaced after a flood. We drove across the sands to the nearest supermarket to Skaftafell which is at Kirkjubæjarklaustur - about 60 miles away.
