Skaftafell

Skaftafell National Park is in the south-east of Iceland. Much of it is in fact the southern portion of the huge Vatnajökull icecap but there are areas of bare mountain and valley glaciers. The land that is not ice-covered is significant because the vegetation covering much of it is relatively verdant for Iceland and is considered to be a remnant of the island's original vegetation. Much of this has been destroyed by grazing which started after the Norse colonisation in. The area is popular but, apart from a visitor centre and campsite, has very limited facilities.
