Leirhnjúkshraun & Víti

This area is in the part of Iceland where two tectonic plates are moving apart, leading to a lot of volcanic. and therefore thermal, activity. It is on Highway 863 off the Ring Road just east of Myvatn.

The road goes up past the Krafla thermal power station to Víti, a lake filled volcano. Just before the crater is a path to
Leirhnjúkshraun, the area of the Krafla fires in the 1970s and 1980s. More activity is expected soon.
