Azay-le-Rideau Ch‰teau

Started in 1518 it is one of the first truly Renaisance ch‰teaux to be built in France. There are two wings set at right angles. The original design would have been for four identical wings enclosing a courtyard. The ch‰teau is built on an island in the River Indre. The parkland around the ch‰teau was laid out in the 19thC and part of the old town was demolished to create this.
