In C11th the Count of Anjou founded a Benedictine Abbey here and a significant town grew around it. However it lacked good defences and after twice being occupied by the English the town saw its trade move to the strongly defended Loches just down the road. Beaulieu is now a pleasantly quiet place with intriguing remnants of its medieval glory scattered around.
