Montsalvy is a typical small French market town which lacks the character of Conques and so gets few tourists. It dates from the 11thC when a monastery and hospice were built later becoming one of the most important abbeys in the area. The town was fortified in the Middle Ages. Two gateways survive as does the medieval street pattern of the old town.
