Yarolslavl - Church of Elijah

The Church of the Prophet Elijah was built in 1647-50 by the wealthy fur trading Skripin family to replace their early wooden church which had been destroyed by fire. In the summers of 1680 and 1681 its interior was decorated with frescoes which are considered to be amongst the very best in Russia. The frescoes have never been covered by later work and are unusual in that as well as their religious content they also contain scenes of every day life in Russia
