Sergiev Posad - Kremlin

Sergiev Posad means Sergius' settlement. Sergius was born in 1314 and became Russia's most venerated spiritual leader. In 1337 he and his brother Stephen founded a small church on a site which now contains the immense Trinity-St Sergius Lavra (a lavra is a monastery of great importance) in its Kremlin. With 300 monks it is the largest working monastery in Russia.
