Sergiev Posad - Refectory

By the late C17th century the old Refectory was too small for the number of monks in the lavra and a new Refectory was built attached to a new church. Built in the Moscow Baroque style it was completed in 1692 and the church dedicated to St Sergius on the tercentenary of his death. At some 300 feet long it is an immense structure and at the time of its building was the largest hall in Russia. The hall was for major events for senior clergy and nobility rather than use by monks who had less grand facilities. Today the single arched chamber is still an amazing sight.
