Pancake Rocks

Pancake Rocks at Punakaiki are thin, horizontal, stylobedded layers of limestone and mudstone. The exact method of stylobed formation is not clear but is not thought to be due to deposition but rather to later compaction. In this coastal area the sea has etched the softer areas and solution of the limestone has allowed formation of caves and blowholes. Pancake Rocks are a major tourist attraction and there is a well made path round the site.
