Otakou Marae

A marae was a Maori meeting place of social and religious significance, and latterly a meeting house.
There is little obvious evidence of Maori culture in South Island, but Otakou was (and still is) an important site for them.
Otakou Marae (and the neighbouring church) are built in modern materials but reflect traditional design and decoration.
