El Kef Kasbah

The hill of Jebel Dyr and its springs has seen settlement since Neolithic times. Carthage established a western stronghold here in C5th BC which was later held by Numidians and Rome. In C17th and C18th the Ottoman empire strengthened it. In 1881 the fort surrendered without offering any resistance (no orders of any sort had been received)
to the French who later developed it as a regional centre. Today the Kasbah dominates the town sprawling below the hill.
